The prevalence of computers in our modern day society means that typing skills are just as important now as they were fifty years ago. Whether it's for professional development or a personal whim, follow these tips to practice and improve your typing.

Correct posture and method are important when learning to type. Sit upright with both feet flat on the floor. Use both hands to type instead of 'chicken pecking' with your index fingers. And in between typing, you should rest your fingers on the middle row of letters, with your right index finger on the J key and your left index finger on the F key (see here for an example).

As with anything, practice makes perfect. The best way to learn how to type is to type! Practice by typing out passages from books or, for a more fun exercise, spend more time communicating via online chat. Once you become more familiar with the keyboard, refrain from looking at the keyboard when you type. By watching the computer screen, you be more vigilant about picking up on your mistakes.

Try playing an online game to improve your speed and accuracy. In #game ">QWERTY Warriors , you defend yourself from hostile enemies by typing out the words that appear beneath them. There are four different difficulty levels.

Test your speed and accuracy at Learn 2 Type . Complete a typing test that will determine how many words per minute you are typing and how many mistakes you have made. If you complete the test five times, the site will calculate your average and award you a printable typing certificate.
