Impromptunes, Live and Free* - Review

Performing out of season for one night only until the Melbourne Fringe Festival , Impromptunes - Live and Free* performed at the Butterfly Club . Perhaps it was the mention of 'free, asterisk' that got everyone curious, for the place was crowded. Before the show began Emmet Nichols played M.C. for a moment and did a darn good job of warming up the crowd. His exuberance and entertaining skills had everyone in good spirits and ready for the show. Before leaving the stage for a moment, he announced that we were to pay what we thought the show was worth at the end of the performance, but not before a little joke was made about the best way to fill a room. Tell them it's 'free, asterisk'.

The next time you see the show, it won't be anything like I describe of course. It's 'Impromptunes' after all. The audience calls the tunes. The loudest voices heard were the ones screaming 'Lord of the Bling', and so it was. The theme of our show for the night.

It all began with life at a coal mine. There was a sweet young thing (Natasha as Laticia) who didn't know how to pick up a shovel, a handsome young man (Amberly as Mike with a secret Science degree) who taught her how. A greedy boss (Morgan) with plans to turn coal into gold and thus becoming Lord of the Bling, by exploiting Mike and dabbling in a bit of alchemy. His colleague (Sophie as Linda) who understood every glint in his eye. The record keeper (Emmet) who recorded details but was not high ranking enough to read what he recorded, and (Cameron) the sweeper that kept the grounds clear.

Love blooms amidst the dusty coal, threats of murder and mayhem are made if there's no cooperation to turn coal to gold, but in the end, plans change when true gold is uncovered in the realisation of life's true treasure. Love is all we need.

We were entertained from start to finish for the whole hour of the show. In the hands of seasoned performers who were quick off the mark and thought on their feet as they hit the ground running, we were in safe hands assured of big belly laughs. They gave us a story so complete, it came with backup background dancers and action movements that supported the scene.

The piano man Greg Lavell had his work cut out for him to provide the appropriate background music to suit the mood of the scene, and at times, leading the way to set the mood. Pretty good at tinkling the ivories his tunes were amazing, considering he didn't know where the story was going either. By all accounts, a good time was had by all. There was plenty laughter in the room to go around.

The next time you catch an Impromptunes moment, make sure you take a group of friends so you have strength in numbers to yell out the title you'd like to see played out. Start thinking about how you're going to challenge these talented performers and give them something they can really bite into.

The next Impromptunes to look forward to is 'Puppets! The Musical' at The Butterfly Club during the Fringe Festival which runs from 16 September to 4 October 2015. This is one of many shows during the Fringe Festival at the Butterfly Club, so check out their website and start choosing what you'd like to see and start booking.
