Between them Hoyts and Village Cinemas take care of movie watching in Melbourne quite adequately. So what's the big deal about IMAX, one wonders. And one will only wonder till one actually sees a movie in the IMAX format. The difference is massive in terms of viewer experience.

How is IMAX Different
On an average screen, even with the digital Dolby systems in full swing, you're treated to a story, some visual appeal, background sound systems, and even 3D animation. You might think a movie projected onto a large screen would make for better viewing. But fact is, the larger the screen the less defined the images. You don't realise this poor quality till you've got something to compare it with.

So you come out feeling you've seen it all and then you witness the IMAX magic. You see the same movie on a screen that's 8 storeys tall. Overwhelming is not exactly the word I'm looking for, but that would have to do. The massive screen does not affect the picture sharpness as its custom made for just that. The images are crystal clear with every pixel intact. The result is amazing.

All your senses rally to help you get a grip on what's going on. The story is the least important, the actors can be anyone; it's the art of cinema that has you in its grip. You keep up, barely, but there's never a moment when you feel the need to yawn or reach for popcorn. There's no more you; just a bundle of senses and the movie.

You're swept along for the entire length of the show and then flung out to the real world. It might take you a while to find your bearings. That's when you might need to hold on to a cup of hot beverage and wonder, "What just happened?" So where do you get this experience in Melbourne? You have two choices.

IMAX Cinema Melbourne
This cinema is located in the Museum complex in Carlton. This is only one of two cinemas to have the Large Format Movie screening in the whole of Australia. General admission tickets are on a first-come-first-served basis. You can book your tickets online but bear in mind these are non-refundable. You need to print out your ticket to gain entrance. Doors open 5 – 10 minutes before screening begins.

IMAX Gift e-Vouchers
IMAX has gift voucher options if you're running out of ideas where gift-giving is concerned. These come in two types—Regular for documentaries that are less than an hour long and Feature for movies. If using the Regular to watch a movie, you will have to pay the difference. These e-vouchers are valid for a year and can be used for any session in that period. You can get more information about IMAX gift vouchers here .

How to Get There
You can get to IMAX Cinemas from the city via Trams 86 and 96 from Bourke Street. If travelling by train, hop off at Parliament station and take a walk through Carlton Gardens, if you have the time. The free tourist shuttle bus service has a stop right in front of the cinema. You can also get here on board the free City Circle tram.
Location: Rathdowne Street, Carlton, Vic 3053
Open: Monday to Sunday 9.45am till late

Hoyts IMAX – Highpoint
Hoyts aims at an immersive experience for the audience at their Highpoint IMAX cinema. Digital projection and digital surround sound system along with the specific structural construction of the theatre itself all come together to give the viewer an enhanced experience as opposed to a routine screening.

The IMAX screen at Highpoint is 17 metres wide and most certainly will not be giving the folks at Carlton IMAX any sleepless nights. But it does compare favourably to an ordinary screening. They also show 2D and 3D movies at this cinema. Free parking is available at the shopping centre and you can also reach here via Tram 82. You can visit Hoyts IMAX for more details about show timings and other information. Enjoy your movie.
