ACMI is currently exhibiting one of Melbourne's Winter Masterpieces and it's providing plenty of interest and a host of activities for the entire family. Federation Square is a-buzz with families off to enrol their children in the many activities Dreamworks Animation has on offer.

Billed as the "Journey from Sketch to Screen", it provides precisely that. Featuring previously unseen drawings, original artwork, models and interactive concepts, it is certainly a journey. There are several free workshops and also paid ones, exciting shopping and eating and loads of films for the children- all on until 5th October.

Free Workshops:

In the area of creation, the entire family can create and animate characters during Cut Out Characters which is free to enter as is Trading Places where the children are able to make fun masks of their favourite creatures. Also at no cost, and using the magical Green Screen, the entire family can travel along beside dragons and Vikings in The Land of the Dragons.

Paid Workshops:
For those adventurous offspring who would like to design, shoot and mould their own clay characters, Animal Escapades is ready for them. The extroverts among them are able to star in their own movie by joining Learn to Tame your Dragon.

Kids Flicks:
Running throughout this exhibition, children are able to view many of their favourites such as Madagascar, Shrek and Antz for just $7 a movie. Movies running over the July school holidays include Shrek the Third, Bee Movie, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar: Escape to Africa and Monsters and Aliens.

Time to Eat:
When it's "hungry time", there's no better place to feed the family than at Optic Kitchen (& Bar) which has an ever popular kid's menu. Please don't forget that if you are an ACMI member there is a 15% discount at this venue.

Membership:
Speaking of membership, Family Membership comprises 5 x Dreamworks exhibition tickets plus 5 x Kid's Flicks tickets to use at any time (remember that the exhibition runs until 5th October)

Movies for the Adults:
If as a parent there is a chance to relax and see a movie while your little ones are occuppied, check out the extensive range of movie topics showing at ACMI. There really is plenty for everyobody's taste. (Le Weekend, the heart breaking Philomena and the excellent Wadjda, On My Way, Saving Mr Banks and Fill the Void)

Shopping:
Here there is the supermarket of gift shops and while there's a bit of "been here before", there is just so much to choose from that it really is a treat for the young ones (the Shrek ears are really popular). If you're a browser from way back, it's worth a look as there are some really interesting pieces worth purchasing from an adult point of view and who knows, maybe you're a Mum or Dad who likes walking around in public wearing Shrek ears?

The exhibition is really easy to reach from almost anywhere. Trains, trams and buses stop directly outside Federation Square at the Flinders Street stop. For those preferring to drive, there are several all day car parks at reasonable prices opposite Federation Square in Flinders Street if you can't find a park along St Kilda Road.
