Do you believe in magic? The skill of distraction and misdirection - did you see it? Was it real? Where did that silk handkerchief disappear to?

Join Sam Angelico and Rosanna Macaronne in their Illusionaire Magic Show on now at the Athenaeum Theatre until Saturday 14 December 2019.

On entering The Athenaeum foyer, our tickets were checked and we formed an orderly line to wait. As we stood there I could hear the anticipation of people in the queue - 'what do you think this show will be like?' 'I wonder if they will do the same tricks as David Copperfield?'

At 7.20 pm, we were swept upstairs to the second level of the Athenaeum Theatre, and confronted by closed large wooden doors. As we stood on the stairs waiting pensively, I began to get nervous - why aren't the doors open? What is happening behind those doors? Is this show actually going ahead? Is this place haunted?

At last the doors were opened and you could smell the history behind the high ceilings and the dark walls of this black box theatre. Presented in front of us was a large horizontal stage adorned with red, gold and bronze regalia, mirrors, plants and pedestals. Playing in the background were some classic Italian songs like 'That's Amore' and other comic classics - a little bit 'unexpected' for a magic show.

Magicians Sam Angelico and Rosanna Macarrone graced the stage and gave us a little bit of history about themselves and the type of magic they would perform. They invited us to imagine we had been invited to a private house for a 'salon' - a place of entertainment and enchantment. Sam told the story about how magicians often performed at private parties and tonight Sam and Rosanna were going to give us a taste of that experience. They also warned us about their Sicilian heritage, and their fetish for knives.

Showman Sam Angelico worked the audience with own special brand of comic magic. From disappearing cards to spontaneous burning instruments to a card reappearing in a lemon, the audience was thoroughly engaged from start to finish - especially the children in the audience.

Participation was also high when Rosanna was blindfolded and with her mentalist powers successfully located a place on the Australian map (already determined by an audience member) with her knife heeled boot. Not only did Rosanna keep the audience in suspense but her later Houdini routine was both amazing and terrifying.

The is around 90 minutes of entertainment, and is very accessible to a broad audience and the complementary magical skills of Sam Angelico and Rosanna Macarrone cover a wide range of tricks and techniques. You can also meet Sam and Rosanna after the show and ask them questions about magic.

Check it out!
