Illuminating ... Rare Cancers - Walter & Eliza Hall Institute

Many of us unfortunately know someone - maybe even ourselves - who has experienced cancer. Most likely it's breast, prostate, bowel, lung or melanoma - these cancers make up 80% of diagnoses.

But what about the other 20%? What can be done to ensure that the 44,000 Australians a year diagnosed with a rare cancer type such as oral/neck cancer, or retinoblastoma, are not left behind in the areas of research, treatment and support?

This coming Wednesday, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Parkville will host an evening exploring the personal experiences of those with rare cancers, their advocates and researchers. They will be joined by speakers and a panel, and you can submit questions you'd like asked on Facebook, Twitter, or email .

The speakers will be:

  • Associate Professor Clare Scott, ovarian cancer researcher and principal scientist at CART-WHEEL

  • Richard Vines, director of Rare Cancers Australia

  • Simone Leyden, chief executive officer of The Unicorn Foundation

  • The panel features the founder of Rare Cancers Australia , Kate Vines, and clinician-scientist Professor David Bowtell from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre .

To book: register online or email.
