Il Divorzio (The Divorce) at Club Italia
When Tony and Laura make the unpopular decision to end their marriage, all hell breaks loose among their conservative and religious Italian parents and confused young children.
The devastating and increasingly common experience of divorce is the subject of this drama by Sam Bellofiore and Amici Del Teatro (Friends of the Theatre) in their one-day-only performance for 2011.
The story presents the couple's breakup after ten years of marriage and conveys the contrasting attitudes towards divorce in three generations of this extended family. The couple views divorce as the only option available to them to end a damaged relationship; their children respond with bewilderment while the grandparents, whose belief in the sanctity of marriage is rocked to the core, struggle to comprehend and accept the situation.
Though the play primarily deals with a serious subject, with its tragi-comic elements, I'm informed that this play will evoke laughter as well as tears.
The play stars Rosalba Dastoli, Joe Russo and is directed by Sam Bellofiore who has been involved in numerous productions since the 1970s including
Padre Pio, Mi Piacciono i Fimmini, (I Like Women) and
Mamma Vivrai, (Mother May You Live Forever).
