Il Casale Nobili Italian Restaurant is another gem in bustling Balmain, a restaurant that exudes Italian charm offering authentic italian food just like you would expect to find in regional Italy. Located on Darling Street, it is located in a suitably rustic brick building with wide open windows, flower pots, and Italian cultural memorabilia creating a little burst of Italy.
I had eaten once before this visit for a romantic dinner date. The restaurant was decked out similar but with candle lighting adding to the ambience. The food and wine, along with a live solo guitarist playing old Italian love songs, was a perfect setting for a first date or special anniversary celebration.
The ambience was incredibly romantic and the food was first rate Italian food just like an Italian Nonna would cook. When I was younger I dated a Calabrese Italian for five years and I think I was more in love with his mother's cooking than him. He turned out to be a true playboy. Apart from the heartbreak I endured from that experience I still retained many fond memories of his mother's cooking.
Homemade tomato sauce, meatballs, pasta and pizza are synonymous with both comfort and authentic Italian Cuisine. So I enjoyed many similar home-made meals in that household. Often it would start with some burrata cheese, Mortadella, olives and bread that you can order from Il Casale's menu here too.

This would of course be followed by a pasta dish made with delicious homemade tomato sauce, the tomatoes lovingly grown in the back yard. Every year my Italian boyfriend's whole family would make a day of bottling fresh tomatoes with basil leaves to preserve. There really is no better flavour than homemade tomato sauce and good quality Italian pasta. Of course Italians don't just stop at one dish, there would often be perfectly cooked scaloppina alla marsala (veal pan-fried with red wine and served with potatoes or just cooked with butter and garlic) or pollo alla pizzaiola (chicken cooked with a tomato, oregano and olive sauce) and of course always salad.
Ill Casale offer all these traditional Italian dishes as well as a tasty seafood selection that screams mouthfuls of ocean. Don't forget to check the wine list and pair all these wonderful dishes with a nice vino.
There is an art to using a wood fired oven which requires the chef to push the fire to the side. Cold air enters creating a circular motion regulating the temperature inside which in turn evenly cooks, resulting in perfecto mundo pizza.
After all I've said don't just think this restaurant is only for romantic couples; all manner of groups are catered for with several lovely dining spaces and settings. You can also order from their takeaway menu if you wish to enjoy at home.
I personally had a wonderful experience dining here. I found service exceptionally professional and very friendly, the food bursting with mouth smacking flavour and perfectly cooked. It is definitely a shining star in my favourite selection of Italian restaurants in Sydney. Well worth a visit.
