Ikebana is the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement, meant to draw the mind to the beauty in nature. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so that each arrangement is an original image from the mind of the artist.

The elements chosen for each arrangement may not be the first thing that would come to mind for a floral arrangement, for example, strips of vinyl ties, horizontal vases, seed pods and twisted branches. Australian native flowers combined with Japanese styling expertise, stems that extend beyond the water source and images of leaves reflected within a vase are some ideas that have come to life. Unusually-shaped vases increase the artistic appeal of these beautiful and fascinating works. Lovely orchids, daisies and chrysanthemums are some of the floral elements. The focus of this year's display is local and native materials.

Ikebana floral arrangements are spoken of as 'sculptures' which celebrate the art forms found in nature. Asymmetry is the preferred balance, while negative space is utilised for enhancing shapes and lines.

The Toowoomba Sogetsu School have presented these small, medium and large Ikebana arrangements in the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery as part of the Carnival of Flowers. The flower arrangements were created by Netta Obst, Margaret Eiser and Dorothy Herrmann of the Toowoomba Sogetsu School. Their wish for the arrangements was to express season and environment. New methods and materials are used in every year's exhibit.

The Ikebana display can be viewed at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery from 10 to 18 September, 10:30am - 3:30pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
