A story for the modern age which features a narrative of computer hacking, identity fraud, deception, and murder is at the heart of the Nora Roberts novel, Identity.

This fictional novel takes readers through a tale of life before and after a tragic crime and flows between the light of good and the darkness of an evil mind.

What's The Story?
This intriguing and sinister tale begins as Gavin Rozwell, a known psychopath is traumatised and damaged by his childhood where he witnessed his mother being a victim of domestic violence. This deeply affected his life and led him to go on a killing rampage against other women. He intricately researches and selects his victims and then takes on different names, physical personas and characters and ingratiates himself into their lives.

Having gained their trust, he then manipulates their bank accounts to withdraw funds, and take out loans in their names, causing them to be financially ruined of all of their hard-earned assets. But more than that, he viciously kills them.

The story focuses on one of his victims, Morgan Nash, who is the only woman to have survived his attack leaving her garden-nurturing housemate Nina to suffer the fatal consequence of Rozwells' lunacy. In this instance, Rozwell is disguised as Luke, a stylish, urban IT specialist who becomes a regular at the bar where Morgan works. But as is his, it's all a charade of sinister intentions.

He spends the story seeking revenge against Morgan as she rebuilds her life by returning home to live with her mother and grandmother in Maine.

It's hard not to like Morgan and feel empathy for her situation. She is strong yet vulnerable, kind and driven - so many admirable characteristics we all seek.

There are definitely two sides to this story. Yes, there is the dark shadow of a looming, sinister Rozwell, but there is an abundance of hope, restoration and love in the story as well. Morgan's "new" relationship and subsequent engagement are heart-warming and a little bit cute. She takes on a new job in a family-owned resort and thrives in her role as a creative cocktail and beverage Manager. While she lost her home, best friend and future to Rozwell, she is forging a new one by reconnecting with her family and opening her heart to the steadfast, focused and deeply besotted Miles.

Themes of survival, overcoming trauma, and the power of love and family are ever present in this story.

Overall, while reading I chose to focus on the positive part of the book around strength courage and bravery but found it a useful reminder of the opportunity for exploitation and scamming in our technically driven lives. There are lessons for us all about staying vigilant but also being open to life's positive possibilities for greatness and happiness.
