Ichi Ichi Ku Japanese Restaurant

Last night I dined solo at Ichi Ichi Ku in South Yarra - luckily only a stone's throw from my front door.
Wow - what a meal.
I walked in with very few expectations, thinking I would duck in to my local Japanese restaurant for a quick meal. It was insanely early, so I was the only one there - but not for long.
The atmosphere was warm and cosy - very Japanese kitsch - and a welcome relief from the winter chill. I was greeted with efficient, friendly service, and delicious food.
Being a huge fan of the "tapas" style of eating, I ordered a number of smaller dishes. The ebi mayo tiger prawns (as pictured below, courtesy of a Facebook snap from the restaurant), pork gyoza and a duck wrap from the specials board. All three were fresh, steaming hot, and tasty.
The serving sizes were not huge, so I still had some room for dessert. How very fortunate, because the chocolate spring rolls were to die for. I was expecting a couple of small rolls on a plate, but what arrived was very different: two rather large rolls, filled with rich chocolate, served with vanilla ice cream and a thick, caramel sauce. Heaven on a plate, even for a non-dessert person like myself.
Here are a few inside tips:
There's only a very small number of tables and they do not take bookings, so either go early or be prepared to wait.
It can be an expensive dinner, depending on what you order. A whole meal of tapas style dishes is definitely pricier than ordering, for example, one entree and a bowl of udon.
If you are a tea-drinker, you will probably enjoy the Japanese rice tea.
That wraps up my experience at Ichi Ichi Ku. I can see myself returning, and not just because it's my local Japanese. Those chocolate spring rolls have found a place in my heart!
