Many of The Iced Bakery's goodies are iced, but there is much more to see and eat. In library terms, there are many shelf metres of delectable mouth-watering goodies.
The shop is on the site of the former well-known Max's Pies. "We still use his pie recipe," remarked owner Peter.
"
Pies are our biggest seller, by far," he added. After a quick count of the pie warmer, I was amazed to count 23 different varieties. Apart from my favourite plain meat, there was cheese & bacon, smoked pulled pork, pizza, and five different curry pies.
Joining the many pies were, pasties, quiches, and five different rolls including spinach rolls, cauliflower rolls, and the ever-popular sausage rolls. Some of which cater to the vegetarian eaters.
Their other most popular product is their vanilla slices. They are huge, almost a meal in themselves, definitely needing a knife and fork to help consumption.
Kiddies aren't forgotten with their shortbread men and smartie cookies.
Another children's favourite is cupcakes.
All products are freshly baked on the premises. On my visit, the one-man iced donut production line was in full swing. It was out of the oven, cooled, iced, sprinkled, displayed and soon to be eaten.
Another favourite is the simple jam and lemon tarts. They are not iced, but a generous dollop of cream would double their taste.
Liquid refreshments are not forgotten. Apart from a 'fridge full of the usual soft drinks, the milkshake counter displayed ten flavours.
No eatery is complete without a coffee machine. Take-away coffee is available in three sizes, with Paige doing the barista duties, and very well I might add.
For the non-cake and pie eaters, a range of ready-made sandwiches and rolls are waiting with some available as toasties.
As is the trend these days, there is an alfresco area in front of the shop, taking advantage of Lilydale's wide footpaths. Three under umbrella-covered tables are there to enjoy your coffee and cake. This area is very popular at weekends.
If there was one place I would like being locked in overnight it would be the Iced Bakery Co, as long as Peter didn't turn off the pie warmer.
