Ian Hoskins is an Australian author and historian who has worked as an academic historian, a curator at the Power House Museum and a professional historian in Sydney for 25 years. He is currently employed full-time as the North Sydney Historian by North Sydney Council where he researches and interprets the local area and takes people for walks around the area.

Ian is extremely passionate about history and landscapes, along with the architecture, modifications and plantings. Ian's interest began with his doctoral work at Sydney University of a study of public parks and gardens in Sydney and the development of floral nationalism in the town planning movement. While putting together his books on Sydney Harbour (2009) and the New South Wales Coast (2013), Ian found that it took him to so many beautiful and fascinating.

Both of Ian's books have won awards.

Sydney Harbour: A History, won the Queensland Premier's Literary Prize for History in 2010

Sydney Harbour defined the life of those who have lived around it for millennia: a means of communication, a barrier, a resource to be exploited, a site of commerce and trade, and a place of beauty, spirit and meaning.

In this book Ian tried to present a sweeping history of one of the world's most recognised places from the days of the harbour clans to the demise of the working waterway in the 21st century, while acknowledging the intimate relationships that make this such as special place. In the course of this book he explores the dispossession of the traditional owners, the transformation from a penal port on the outer rim of the European imagination to an extraordinary port of the Empire then into a symbol of a city and, finally, of a nation.

And

Coast: A history of the New South Wales Edge won the NSW Community and Regional category of the NSW Premier's History Awards 2014.

Coast flowed out of the history of Sydney Harbour Ian wrote in 2008-2009. In that particular project Ian was alerted to the absence of maritime, coastal, marine narratives in our literature. Ian found that even though Sydney Harbour prompted plenty of art but there were very few stories about Sydney Harbour.
