Sergei Boutenko has released his documentary called 'I Want Abs'. The premise is a simple idea and we follow his personal journey to attain rock hard abs.

Sergei is the star, producer and director of this film, and he uses himself as a lab rat. He starts by explaining how he has been feeling unhealthy since turning thirty, and sluggish and wanted to make a positive change.

He has his 'before' photo taken professionally and it's the first time he has worn speedos. It's a way for him to keep himself on track and accountable.

Then we meet Sergei's team. John Hacker is a personal trainer who specialises in functional fitness and Nic Goebeler his kettlebell instructor. John recommends an optimal body fat composition of between 10 per cent to 20 per cent, which he says is a more accurate determination of a healthy weight and size than body mass index measurements.

You may have heard of the phrase 'abs are made in the kitchen'. Sergei explains his take on this and goes through his diet. He grew up on a diet of raw vegan and his surname might be familiar as his mother Victoria has written a number of bestselling books about improving their health and overcoming illnesses through healthy eating and green smoothies. Sergei has found he needs to include grains and carbohydrates, as well as some ethically produced meat and eggs to feel optimal.

Sergei embarks on kettlebell workouts a couple of times a week. As a female, the exercises looked challenging and dangerous, but Sergei sees the large weights as a way to stay focused on the workouts. It's not long before he starts to feel the positive impact of regular exercising and the resulting endorphin high.

It's great to see Sergei struggle to do difficult exercises but improve as time passes. He has a positive infectious attitude to his project. At one point he questions his goal, but rather than getting depressed he simply changes the goal posts slightly but realistically. He even grows out his beard to show an authentic progression of time.

This documentary is going to appeal to people who also want to have defined abs and feel healthier. I would have liked to see Sergei include more formal interviews with his team of experts, and to hear how other people gained their abs. 'I Want Abs' is a realistic portrayal of one person's journey towards abs as a by-product to a healthier and fitter lifestyle.
