I Carusi II is not like your ordinary pizza joint. This beautifully subtle restaurant situated on the always-popular stretch on Barkley Street in St Kilda takes you to Italy with its fresh cuisine and authentically Italian ambiance. It's always refreshing to hear the quick Italian banter coming from the kitchen as the chefs passionately put together your pizza.
When the weather is good it is refreshing to sit outside with an Italian beer or a nice drop of Italian wine. Very relaxing I assure you. The anti-Pasto is a no brainer to start off, as the palpable combination of the fresh ingredients really kicks your taste buds into gear. The pizzas are generally quite simple but if you're like me, you might enjoy the fact that it's not overflowing with cheese and tomato. They are exquisite in the way that the few toppings work together as with the Napoli styled Genovese with its tomato, goat's cheese, pesto, roasted peppers and prosciutto. Simply brilliant.
I now find it hard to order pizza from anywhere else, as there is a special way in which they cook the crusts, which no one else can seem to replicate. On the contrary, people have warned me about the 'abruptness' of the staff but through the many visits there I'm yet to have any issues, perhaps it is a clash of cultures, you may have to find out for yourself.
Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lovely restaurant to anyone. It is perfect for a first date or a big group of friends. My only regret is that I'm yet to try one of their desert pizzas. I think I will have to hold back on the anti-Pasto next time to fit one in.
