Hyperdome Film Classics - Roman Holiday (1953)

To celebrate my 50th birthday, I treated myself to my dream holiday - several weeks touring Italy. Why Italy, you ask? Easy. When I was in my late teens, I was totally entranced by a very beautiful, young actress, by the name of Audrey Hepburn, in a movie by the name of Roman Holiday.

Roman Holiday was released in 1953 and was essentially the movie which made Ms Hepburn famous. The movie was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning three, though it is better known as being the film in which this style icon was born.

Interestingly, as Hepburn's first non-European film, the Director, William Wyler, had concerns that Audrey appeared "a little heavy". Can you imagine Audrey Hepburn heavy? Apparently, she was just over 5 kilos above the weight she maintained throughout latter years.

Roman Holiday also starred Gregory Peck, though if you are under 40 years of age that will probably mean nothing to you. Vespers were also featured, those chic little scooters that became so popular in the 60's. I quite liked these too.



Audrey plays a princess who is bored by her duties. She escapes the confines of royalty and spends a day as a civilian, meeting up with Americans Gregory Peck and Eddie Albert. If you have no memory of Greg Peck, you will be clueless about Eddie Albert. Some of us remember him as the long-suffering husband of Zsa Zsa Gabor in Green Acres.

Of course, the princess gets into all sorts of mischief and there is also a hint of romance which was always the case in movies from those days.

The Logan Library, Hyperdome Logan branch, will be showing this movie on Tuesday, 23rd August, from 9:30am to 11:30am. Bookings at the Library, at 66-70 Mandew Street, Shailer Park, are essential, and there is no charge.



I enjoyed this movie so much that when in Rome, I did the self-guided Roman Holiday Walking Tour. And more movie trivia - this movie was considered to be the first in which the American population had the opportunity to witness modern day Rome. Look here.
