Weekends away are one of my favourite things to do and even nicer if it's a spur of the moment weeknight getaway. Christmas and new year festivities were over, we had a few days free so thought why not take off somewhere within 1-2 hrs drive. The weather was cooler with light rain but we decided the perfect place to visit would be the Blue Mountains. Bush walking the nature trails, gazing at the blue-tinted mountains and breathtaking valley views would be stunning any time of year.

I love historical buildings, the older the better but not in a run down state. I also wanted to stay in a hotel with style and elegance. Choosing the newly renovated Hydro Majestic Hotel was an easy choice, perched on a clifftop with stunning views over the Megalong Valley.

The fact it was raining was another reason I wished to choose a larger hotel. In case it rained so hard that I couldn't go out walking, then I could be happy just to explore the grand hotel and enjoy a cosy wine by the window looking over the misty mountains and valley.

Back in 1902, the Hydro Majestic Hotel was the grandest Hotel in the area, where fabulous parties were held, a grand casino to play in and just a place to be seen.

But eventually, good days came to an end with a bushfire that badly damaged the hotel. After several tries to revive the site it was then closed for six years. Finally, under the ownership of Huong Nguyen and George Saad, the hotel had undergone a $30m restoration transformation. I was quite excited to check it out.

Unfortunately, it was raining as we headed off. It rained even harder when we arrived at the hotel. Our room wasn't ready so we decided to have a quick walk around inside the hotel. The entrance foyer was beautifully decorated with a festive Christmas tree.

The Hotel is one of Sydney's oldest in the area, first built in the late 1800s and oozes history. If you feel inclined you can do a guided tour of Hotel, which runs for just over an hour for $10 each. We were keen to settle in an armchair for a few red wines by the windows, so we did our own quick tour around. The new look was grand and impressive. The Wintergarden dining room has spectacular views over the valley. The room is brightly decorated in art deco style furnishings in royal yellow, plenty of natural light streams in with full window views over Megalong Valley. The ideal location for fine dining and enjoying their premium afternoon High Tea.

We entered the main foyer in the Dome building. This was once the original casino area, now a lovely lounge area. Another beautiful Christmas tree and impressive chandelier featured in the centre.

I love the Edwardian armchairs throughout and the victorian circular lobby couch. I wished I was back in 1902 wearing an Edwardian vintage dress sipping a glass of absinthe.

We moved further on through to Salon du The and Cat's Alley which is more like a very chic oriental tea room. I love the art deco oriental theme.

The space exuded an exotic mood with warm magenta walls, lounges and carpets. Stunning Zimmerman paintings streamed along the walls in the cats alley, cosy velvet lounges begged you to sit and a flattering warm glow emitted from the art deco light shades. I particularly liked the satin drapes fringed in peacock feathers, so decadent.

This area is open Friday to Sunday from 2 pm but there's nothing to stop you from sitting down at other times and reading a book or just gazing out at the view. They have a line up of well-known musicians booked to play throughout 2016. I could imagine this area being very popular for enjoying a few drinks.

We then decided to grab a hotel umbrella and walk along the boardwalk outside to the new Hydro Majestic Pavilion. This is now a stunning space showcasing the history, filled with beautiful gifts, delicious gourmet food, top quality regional wines and interesting knick knacks.

This building also has a cafe area where you can sit down and have a casual bite to eat or just a coffee and cake.

We were very keen to have a few wines as the rain was still streaming down. The option to buy a glass there or a bottle. We saw some gift packs of regional Wine from Orange for a very good price so we snapped them up in a flash.

We could have ventured further into the rain down to the Boiler House cafe for a drink but decided that a cosy armchair by the window in the hotel would be the place to be.

Our Heritage Valley view room was ready but we took our time finishing our bottle of Robert Stein Reserve Shiraz. The constantly changing view over the valley, background Roaring Twenties music playing felt enchanting. What a fabulous era the twenties must have been!

Finally, we went to our room. We were impressed, though compact in size, it had a fabulous luxury bed, nice ensuite, tea coffee making facilities, flatscreen TV, everything we needed and the large picture window looking over the valley was lovely.

We started another bottle of red and watched the constantly changing view of the Megalong Valley.

Soon it was time to get ready for dinner. I wanted to visit my favourite restaurant in Leura, Silk's Brasserie . I didn't care if it was raining cats and dogs I was going!

After a totally delicious dinner, we headed back to the hotel and decided we really needed to visit the Hydro Majestic Hotel again and stay at least 2-3 nights so we could try out the dining room at the Hotel, bars and surrounding walking trails in hopefully better weather!

Check it out you will love it!
