About an hour's drive north of Geraldton lies the extraordinary Hutt Lagoon . This 70-square-kilometre lake has a pink hue that can best be seen in the middle of a clear day. The amount of cloud cover does change the vibrancy of the colour. You might encounter anything from red to bubblegum pink to lilac purple depending on the time of year.

The lagoon is mostly below sea level. A beach barrier ridge and barrier dune system separates it from the ocean and marine waters feed it through springs. Its hue is created by a carotenoid-producing algae.

We stopped at the lookout on Port Gregory Road which provided a great view and an opportunity to get out of the car. We spent quite some time walking around and exploring with a camera on hand. You could also pull over at safe spots along George Grey Drive. The lake sits between the two roads. If you'd prefer to let someone else do the driving, then feel free to join a guided tour instead. Either way, this iconic sight is not to be missed while travelling along the coast of Western Australia.
