Hundreds of Free Documentaries to Watch

Are you stuck at home and feeling bored? Are you having trouble finding something to watch on TV? Perhaps you've been surfing from the couch and finally even Netflix, Stan or Amazon Prime seem to have nothing left to offer. You could get up and do some exercise but if that just isn't on your agenda why not try these free documentary channels on YouTube. Chooses from hundreds of shows to watch on your smart TV, computer or phone. So whether you're looking to fill an hour or settling in for some binge-watching, these are the channels for you.

1. TRACKS. TRACKS is a UK based travel channel bringing viewers documentaries from around the world. They promote themselves as being "for experienced travellers, everyday adventurers, and urban explorers with a taste for new experiences in all parts of the world - around the next corner and over the rainbow."

Their videos range in length from 20 minutes to over an hour, some are recent and some are from the archives, but regardless I have found all that I've watched to be interesting. Examples of the documentaries you will find on the channel are Great Wall of China: The Hidden Story, India's Unique Burial Rituals, Searching for Missing WWII German U-boat in the Baltic Sea, The Zambezi River: Mozambique's Force of Life, Dunhuang's Legendary Silk Road, Most Dangerous Places in the World, and Finding the Ancient Fire Worshippers of Yazd.

2. RTD Documentary. RTD Documentary is a Russian based English language channel. The stories presented are not only from Russia but are drawn from across the world. RTD says they offer "Stories that inspire and educate. That break hearts and lift spirits. Stories that explore the depths of the human soul and the expanses of nature. Stories that are real – and true." Their 900 thousand plus subscribers give credence to that claim.

I found this channel while I was researching ice breaker ships and watch it often. I find their content is often unique and surprising. Some of the videos on offer include The Future of Robots: Indispensable Helpers or Fierce Rivals, The Future is Now: Biomedical Advances, This is China: China's High Speed Rail, Submarines of the Northern Fleet, Farming for Likes: Rural Bloggers and Mosul: Between War and Peace.

3. Real Stories. ith more than three million YouTube subscribers it is clear this channel is providing content that people are keen to watch. Real Stories licence content from many different media channels and that means variety for the viewers. Committed to uploading at least four full length documentaries a week this channel will never get stale.

Recent uploads include The Brothers Who Aged Backwards, Toots Hibbert and the Birth of Reggae, The Path to Shaolin, Crisis in New Delhi: Earth's Most Polluted City, These Men Work in an Active Volcano, The Panama Papers: Behind the Scheme, and Life with Mongolian Nomads.

4. BBC Docs. BBC Docs is the official BBC documentary channel and with more than 360 thousand subscribers it is popular with viewers. It aims to deliver epic documentaries that are both thought-provoking and captivating. The content on this channel is varied indeed and anybody should be able to find something of interest here.

The videos range from interviews lasting only minutes to full hour-long documentaries. Some of the more recent offerings include The Wild West: Custer's Last Stand, The World of Stonehenge (4 episodes), The Young Vets (8 episodes), and History of the World (8 episodes).
