Human & Almost is a new exhibition showing at Off the Kerb Gallery featuring the engaging artworks of Leigh Hewitt. Including an array of portraits and still lifes, from friends and family to kitsch and everyday objects (and even the odd Taiwanese traffic directing robot thrown in), each subject holds fascination for this talented artist.

Leigh Hewitt is a Melbourne based artist who paints representational works with oils. Leigh knew he wanted to be an artist from a young age but the path to realising his dream has not been a straightforward one. Over the years he has had a number of "real" jobs which he did not enjoy and found unfulfilling. He studied painting and printmaking at TAFE before moving to Taiwan for a year with his then girlfriend. He continued with his painting, before getting married and returning to Australia. Since returning he has studied painting at the Victorian College of the Arts and has shown his work in a number of group and solo exhibitions.

Leigh describes his art as "representational, sometimes realistic and sometimes cartoonish." He finds inspiration in many things including the human form, faces, nature and shapes and colour combinations of all kinds. Leigh explains, "I love finding compositions and attempting to capture the mundane and beautiful world." He enjoys working with oil paint as he loves the feel and the smell but most of all, loves the look of it while it's wet.

For this exhibition, there will be around a dozen paintings shown, including a series of bigger portraits of casually posed friends alongside smaller still life works. There is a recurring theme in the artist's still life works of kitsch objects and tourist artefacts such as small figurines. One of his more unique works in the show is a painting of a traffic directing mannequin from Taiwan. Explaining his choice of title for this show, Leigh reveals "Human & Almost is a tidy umbrella title to show these works together under, along with some other still lifes of everyday objects."

The Human & Almost Exhibition will commence at Off the Kerb Gallery on Friday 27th September and run until 11th October 2018. It will be shown in the Upstairs Gallery.

Opening night is on Friday 28th September from 6pm - 9pm.
