I was a bit dubious when my friend first suggested we go to this one. The Faulty Towers Dining Experience is a Fringe stalwart, it was created 20 years ago and is in its 10th Adelaide Fringe Season. I thought it might be a bit daggy, but I'm happy to say that my friend was right and I was wrong. This. Was. A. Hoot.
Rob Langston, Karina Garnett and Anthony Sottile are superb as Basil, Sybil and Manuel respectively, with their character portrayals spot on.
Guests are greeted at the door by the Maitre D and advised to purchase some drinks in the bar before the show. Before long Basil, Sybil and Manuel appear amongst the crowd to seat the guests to dinner. Hilarity ensues at the typical language barrier between Basil and Manuel arises and Langston must have thought he had the night handed to him on a platter when one dining party announced early on that they were German. Queue many don't mention the war quips.
Once seated the guests are then served a 3 course meal by the actors and the very patient Strathmore waiting staff. The meal, by the way, was delicious, a potato and leek soup, perfectly cooked chicken breast with hollandaise sauce and finished off with a lemon tart.
With plenty of crowd participation and improvisation no two shows are the same, the gags are classic British slapstick and the dialogue stays true to the TV show. The Strathmore is the perfect setting for this interactive comedy. Upstairs in the Balcony restaurant, you really could believe you were at Fawlty Towers.
The Faulty Towers Dining Experience is on at The Strathmore Hotel on North Terrace from 17 February - 19 March (excluding Wednesdays).
