Enjoy films like
SAMANA SUNRISE (Amanece en Saman e1) featuring an all-star cast - Luis Zahera, Mar eda Luisa Mayol, Luis Tosar and B e1rbara Santa-Cruz. Also watch the highly acclaimed
EL 47, which won the coveted Best Film and four other awards at the Goya Awards 2025.
EL 47 shared the Best Film award with a gripping crime thriller,
UNDERCOVER (La Infiltrada) and a romantic drama
OCHO (8) from celebrated auteur Julio Medem.
The festival opener is
SAMANA SUNRISE.
Synopsis
This is a comedic story about two couples celebrating their twenty-year friendship.
Mar eda Luisa Mayol (Fatum), B e1rbara Santa-Cruz (If I Were Rich), Luis Zahera (The Realm) and Luis Tosar (also in Undercover) star in this sun-soaked relationship comedy full of twists and turns from Rafa Cort e9s, based on the play Canc fan by Jordi Galcer e1n.
When two couples, Ale and Santi and Natalia and Mario, visit an idyllic seaside resort in Saman e1, Dominican Republic, to celebrate their friendship, Ale is fueled by rum and confesses something from when they first met. Heavily hungover, Ale wakes the next morning and finds events completely different from the day before. They are hilarious and in some ways, cathartic. She has a sliding-doors moment that reveals hidden attractions and frustrations, putting their friendships to the test.
I think the Spanish do comedy well, it is smart without being patronising. This is one of the films I will watch because a good comedy always makes for a good night out.
Here are short synopses of a few of the other films you may enjoy:
EL 47 - This film is based on a true story of a grassroots movement that transformed Barcelona and its suburbs forever.
OCHO (8) - A film that follows a couple's tumultuous relationship from 1931 to 2021. See how Octavio and Adela form an indelible connection over eight decades.
UNDERCOVER (La Infiltrada) - A gripping crime thriller based on the true story of a Spanish police officer, Aranzazu Berradre Marin and how she infiltrated a terrorist organisation.
SUMMER IN DECEMBER (Verano en Diciembre) - Four generations of women gather in Madrid for a family reunion. Tensions rise and secrets are revealed in this dramatic comedy that is a tribute to family.
LITTLE LOVES (Los Peque f1os Amores) - A drama featuring a Mother and Daughter forced to spend a summer together after the mother has a fall. The proudly independent mother and her daughter experience revealing moments as their relationship comes into focus.
With the five films above and another 25 in the festival, you 2019re truly spoiled for choice. Visit the HSBC Spanish Film Festival

Movie festivals are a great way to see foreign films and learn about another country's culture, lifestyle, food, and how they see the world. Make it a date night with your besties, your significant other, or go on your own and enjoy some
me time.
Watching a movie with others is always social, and the big screen is better than sitting at home streaming movies and shows. Book your movie tickets and dinner at a nearby restaurant to make a night of it. Enjoy quality time with your friends or partner at the HSBC Spanish Film Festival this June/July. Book your tickets now.
