Halloween has taken off in Australia. Many shopping precincts hold events where kids can trick-or-treat dressed in spooky costumes in a safe environment. They visit local traders, places they go with their families regularly and are not knocking on strangers' doors.
Last Halloween, I drove along Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn and saw families out and about. Even the babies were dressed as pumpkins, which was really cute. And it's on again this year.
Dogs are an important part of an extended family. And in some cases, dogs literally are family. People who live alone often keep a small dog for company. And many couples dote on their pets as if they were children.
So, of course, dogs like to be involved in family events, including Halloween.
There's no harm in dressing up your dog and getting him involved in the festivities… as long as he doesn’t mind participating. And if a pet does mind, they soon tell you by shaking off the offending object.
But dogs are a lot like people. Some are extroverts and love attention; others are timid and prefer not to stand out. In the end, you know your dog.
If you decide to bring a dressed-up Fido, something simple will suffice. It might be a cape or head scarf.
A surprising number of stores have costumes for dogs this year. I've seen doggie attire in Woolworths, Petbarn, Aldi, Big W -- none seemed overly expensive.
As well as attending local community events, if you wish to see some dogs that love the limelight, the biggest Doggie event is HOWL-O-WEEN on Rouse St in Port Melbourne.
They plan on having the largest Doggy Costume Parade in Australia.
You can go for a gander or take your pooch. It's a lot more fun if you come “in costume” and embark on the biggest Doggy Trick or Treat ever seen in Australia.
Port’s HOWL-O-WEEN is on Sunday, 29 OCT, on the corner of Rouse & Bay St. Here's the program.
9 am - 10 am: Dog Registration Check-In
10 am - 11 am: Doggie Parade & Children’s Trick or Treat
11 am - 1 pm: Competitions, Entertainment, Prizes
There is a market full of stalls catered to pooches. Prizes, competitions and doggy bags will also be available on the day.
The Charity Partner for HOWL-O-WEEN is Guide Dogs Victoria, with 100% of your registration fee from the Doggie trick-or-treat parade donated directly to the Guide Dogs to help aid their valuable work.
