Bright, in north-east Victoria, is one of the state's favourite family destinations. With year-round outdoor attractions, it's also becoming the key accommodation hub for visitors to the region's growing gourmet attractions.

However, sometimes it's the simple things that are important. Kids aren't interested in sitting still while you sample the excellent beers at the Bright Brewery , as my husband has learned to his chagrin. Luckily for him, and everyone else, just down the embankment is the fabulous adventure playground at Howitt Park.

Situated on the Ovens River, the playground is serviced by a large car-park and also by the walking track that forms part of the #bright ">Canyon Walk .

The playground is well maintained by the council, with an excellent drinking water tap, clean BBQs, rubbish bins that are obviously emptied regularly, and clean picnic tables in good repair.

While the surface of the playground is tanbark, it's surrounded by lawn and shaded by huge old European trees (ie, not eucalypts so you probably won't get a branch dropped on your head).

There is loads of space on the playground - I've seen it very busy many times, but there is still lots of room for kids of all ages and sizes to run around without causing any congestion problems.

It's on the banks of the Ovens River, so my only caution would be to keep an eye on littlies or kids who are prone to wandering, as there is no significant barrier to the river.

On a warm day, it's a beautiful spot to rest and watch the kids play, or, if you're feeling energetic, to run around with the kids.

When you've finished, you can climb the embankment (or take the path) and enjoy a cleansing ale or lager at the Bright Brewery while the kids munch on hot chips, or perhaps one of the 40 flavours of ice-cream at the Le Blanche Ice Creamery just up the street.
