Have you ever wanted to write about your hobbies or let the world know your tricks of the trade? Blogging is a great way to write, post photos or promote a business however it came seem a bit daunting starting one from scratch. Here is a run down on how to start a blog, run it and most importantly, make it successful.
Step 1 Know what you want to blog about. This may seem like an obvious first step but the most successful blogs are the ones that have a main focus. Whether its fashion, gardening, cultural commentary or endangered lizards, be sure to know your stuff.
Decide on which platform you'd like to use. Wordpress, Blogger and Tumblr are generally the most popular platforms around at the moment. I've used all three and personally I find Wordpress has the best features and. It's really easy to promote and market your blog through Wordpress.
Step 3 Choose a domain name. This is an important step because if you want the blog to be remembered then its important to make sure your domain name is easy to remember and catchy. Depending on the platform you choose, your domain name will look something like this: example.wordpress.com or example.blogspot.com.
You can also get a .com domain name for a small yearly fee depending on the platform.
Step 4 Start blogging. When it comes to writing your blogs I recommend writing them in Word (or your preferred typing program) before posting it. This ensures you can run a spell check before posting.
It's good to publish a post weekly, at the least, to keep your readers interested. People have asked me "Can you blog too much?" the answer is yes. I've had to stop following blogs that post 10 times a day because they fill my inbox faster than I can read them. Posting everyday is great but 10 times a day, not so much.
Blog post titles are very important. The title is what lures your readers in. I wrote a blog post on girls playing video games. I could have called it Girls Who Play Video Games, but that wouldn't have caught many eyes. I called it Guys Dig Chicks that Play Video Games and I had a huge number of views that day, a lot of them were men. Think of how you can word your post title so people can't just skip past it. Make them curious.
Once you have your blog up and running, this is where the hard work comes in: promoting you blog. There are plenty of free ways to market your blog. The most common way is through other social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
Twitter is great way to expand your readership to beyond just people you know. It's a great idea to create a Twitter account for your blog. You can follow like minded people or people you think would be interested in your blog and most of the time they will follow you back. The more followers you have the wider your readership will be so follow, follow and follow.
Facebook is great too because all your existing Facebook friends can like your blog and easily promote it to their friends as well.
One of the easiest and greatest ways to gain readers is to read other people's blogs, comment on them and like them. I find the Wordpress community is awesome and everyone is supportive of each other.
Maintain your blog. Keep blogging regularly, reply to comments and keep following people on twitter to constantly gain readers. As your blog builds momentum, people will start following your blog without you having to lift a finger (except keep writing, of course). The best marketing is word of mouth. When people love reading your blog, they will repost it on Facebook or tweet about or even reblog it to their readers and your readership with expand with each passing day.
Lastly, Keep an eye on your stats. They will tell you what days you've had the most views and which of your blog posts are the most popular. This allows you to tailor your posts to what your readers are responding to. If you write posts that aren't getting a great response but the subject matter is important to you then change your approach. Feedback is important, get everyone you know to read it and let you know what they like and don't like because to have a successful blog you need to stay relevant and interesting.
