Many people worry they aren't pruning their fruit trees properly for maximum productivity and often they're right! Pruning a tree for the shape of it, is a simple exercise for the seasoned gardener, but when it comes to fruit trees there are some important elements to consider.
In this course by Pete the Permie, you will learn how to assess fruit trees and evaluate what is needed to make them more productive. Students will develop & present plans to renovate an orchard, then in a field session will put theory into practice. You will see some great examples of trees that need help and will come away with the know-how to be able to prune an orchard back to productivity.
This class series will cover
%%
• How to assess what needs doing (or not)
• Pruning to renovate your trees back into shape (when & how much to cut off)
• Different approaches for different types of fruit trees – they're not all created equal
• Variety selection, adding or changing trees, if necessary
• Feeding and water requirements
• What equipment or tools to use
• Follow-up management for your fruit trees
• Pest and disease – present and future management
• Organic control methods and products for pests, disease and weeds
• What is required for Certified Organic or Biodynamic and how to go about this%%
Pete will show you some of his latest "toys" – the equipment he uses for fruit tree pruning, including some of the latest battery operated gear available. The right equipment means it's not a huge physical task, and removes the need for climbing. So pruning fruit trees should be easily achievable by anyone, with the right gear.
You'll come away knowing how to shape fruit trees while keeping your feet on the ground, have greater productivity and reachable pickability (yes that is now a word). Anyone who has fetched a ladder to pick that fruit on those branches, will know what that means!
This course is for beginner through to advanced, because the skills apply equally to a backyard or up to a commercial orchard. This course will benefit
%%
• Enthusiastic gardeners
• Horticulture & fruit tree specialists,
• Permaculture designers and consultants
• Permaculture & horticulture students
• New owners with an existing orchard in any condition
• Employees and the self-employed working in this field
• Anyone who wants to maximise harvest from their fruit trees with minimal effort.%%
I have learnt a lot from Pete the Permie about fruit trees, so I can say this course is a must for anyone who has or who works with established fruit trees. He also holds classes on fruit trees from basic pruning, to espaliers and design.
