HOW TO LIVE (After You Die) - Sydney Opera House Review

As part of the Sydney Opera House UnWrapped series, Emmy award-winning filmmaker/artist Lynette Wallworth (critically acclaimed works include Collisions, Evolution of Fearlessness, Tender, Coral and Awavena) brings a unique, true-life story to the stage in HOW TO LIVE (After You Die).In recent times, we have witnessed the rise of radical fringe organisations and cults, proclaiming their beliefs and using social media to recruit followers who want to be part of something big (think QAnon and the team of charismatic self-styled prophets who advised Trump throughout his presidency). For Wallworth, she was watching her past looming into the present.

HOW TO LIVE (After You Die) follows a young person's indoctrination into a shared belief system that divides and polarises its followers. The story explores and exposes the extremist influences and power of cults that manipulate, mould and control us. It also tells of the enduring love and hope that those we once trusted hold onto, and their yearning to guide us back to a life of freedom, choice, meaning and truth.

HOW TO LIVE (After You Die) is a confronting and compelling story, and one that Wallworth had never planned to tell because she is the central character and this is the story of her life. Performed on a bare stage, with only images and words projected onto the background, Wallworth delivers a performance that is at once intimate and captivating, fragile and resilient. Her stillness and calm on stage is in stark contrast to the story she is telling, and the audience hangs on her every word.In a world of uncertainty where radical beliefs and extremist voices have a profusion of platforms from which to preach, we are experiencing a rising appeal of sectarian politics and fringe organisations, with followers fuelled by distrust in authority and a desire to belong. Wallworth did not envisage a time when her story would need to be told as a cautionary tale, but it is a story as much for today as it was those years ago when she was a teenager. The main story is interwoven with other events in Wallworth's life that have had a deep, profound and positive impact on her life. HOW TO LIVE (After You Die) is storytelling at its finest and you will come away from the performance awakened and inspired.
