Hosting a garage sale can be a lot of work but the end results are quite rewarding. You get to declutter the house plus make some money. I have been hosting garage sales for the past 10 years and would like to outline my tips on making it a good one.

Advertise like crazy
Make up some posters and stick them up around your neighbourhood. The best places I have found that gets a lot of attention is shopping centre notice boards, bus stops and traffic lights. Always seek council permission before placing a poster up in public. Get the store owner's consent before taping a poster to their window or notice board. Make sure you remove all posters as soon as the sale is over.

Another great way to advertise is online through various sites such as Facebook, Gumtree, Trading Post, and Gazzas Garage Sales.

Clearly indicate prices
Buy some stickers to write prices on and stick them on your items. If you have a ton of stuff, consider making some posters that say "everything on this table is $2" for example. Put things in baskets with signage to show the price. There's nothing more annoying than attending a garage sale and having to ask the host what the price is every five minutes.

Make sure everything is tidy to keep rummaging to a minimum. I have found that most people are not keen to get down on their knees and rummage through tubs of clothes, books, or toys. I have missed many sales because I thought I was doing the right thing until I attended a garage sale and had to do the same and could not be bothered.

Try to lay out your items so they are all visible. Get as many trestle tables as you can so you can display your items better.

Be friendly, go the extra mile, offer a drink
Put on your best customer service smile and really interact with your customers. Say hello to everyone, greet the children, make conversation about the weather, their car, your items, anything! I always find that if I am happy and enthusiastic then they will be too and it'll be less awkward. Put the radio on low so it's not totally silent, offer cups of water, buy a cheap bag of chocolates or lollies and offer them to the kids. It's all about going that extra mile to satisfy customers.

Be prepared to lower the prices, give people discounts or deals
Of course, you will want to make a good amount of money, however, it's always a smart idea to offer customers deals to make things cheaper in case they are thinking of not buying. For example, when I had a garage sale this year, I had two dollar teddy bears for sale but let a lady have 3 for $5. I lost a dollar, but gained a happy customer who said she would like to know when I am hosting my next sale.

Overall, having a garage sale can be a very fun and unique experience. You might get annoying or rude customers but try your best to be polite and not so focused on the money you are earning.
