Cucumber sandwiches and dainty china make up the critical elements of a high tea, where your pinky sticks out as you sip your Earl Grey. What started as a simple late afternoon meal has become a ritual that now accompanies many celebrations, where one too many sweets are usually consumed. If you're thinking of hosting your own high tea, then follow these tips for a truly elegant party.

Decide what you want to celebrate. High teas are a popular option for baby showers, hens' nights, birthdays, mothers day, or simply as a chance to chat with friends over tasty treats. Choose somewhere to hold your high tea, pick a place that suits the event or that can at least be decorated so. Once you know what and where you're celebrating it is time to get started.

Stock up on tea cups before you hold your high tea. It's popular to serve your guests on mismatched floral tea sets, but if you find a full tea set go for it. As well as tea cups you'll need a few teapots, high teas will usually give you a few different tea options so make sure you can serve up a few to you guests. Your final high tea essential is a three tier cake stand, this is used for your sandwiches, scones, and sweets.

Search for your tea cups, cake stands, and teapots at some of these places:
T-bar , Rundle Mall and The Adelaide Central Market
General Trader , Rundle Mall and Westfield Marion
Creative Cooks, South Road
Wheel and Barrow , Rundle Mall
Antique Market, Grote Street

Next, choose what you'll be drinking. Obviously the drink of choice is tea, but there are so many flavours to choose from. Common favourites are English Breakfast, Earl Grey, or Lady Grey, but make sure you have at least one interesting blend. If you're hosting for over 18s then make sure you add some PIMMS, champagne, or both. PIMMS is a gin based drink with spice and citrus flavours, it is mixed with lemonade or ginger ale and garnished with fresh fruit and cucumber. A deliciously refreshing drink.

Try some tantalising teas from T-bar, or check out the tea section of your local supermarket.

You'll want to have some delicious food to accompany your tea. The regulars scones with cream and jam, and salmon or cucumber sandwiches. These are both quite easy to make and you can find many easy recipes on the internet. The rest is up to you, but common additions are chocolate, macarons, cupcakes, or petit fours. Check out our recipe for some delicious macarons, and try your hand at baking some sweets.

If you're not the baking sort make sure you try some of these places buy your high tea sweets.
The Mac Factory , Hutt Street
BTS, Pirie Street
American Candy Stand , The Parade
Cocolat , Rundle Street

Once you've got everything together it's time to mail out your invitations and get the party underway. Start with the sandwiches, and finish with your sweets.

If you do decide to hold a high tea, make sure you tell us all about it in the comments.
