There is always somewhere amazing you can be and something wonderful to do :)

I love this Gift
How does your Christmas shopping list look? Do you purchase with purpose or a fingers crossed 'I hope they like it' buy? How often have you bought a gift for your partner or kids only to see a little disappointment in their face or a 'flick it to the side and open the next gift' attitude?

I have come up with an idea that even my teenage kids actually like! And it appeals to my "inner craftiness."

In order to give a gift that is going to be:

1. Wanted

2. Needed

3. Loved

4. Not re-gifted

You need to know what that gift is and therefore, I prefer to know what they would like, without taking away the element of surprise. Curious?

This idea is very simple, cost-effective and will save you time. You can either shop online or at the department stores but you can lower your stress levels because you will know exactly what you are buying and where from. No more wandering aimlessly around, second-guessing and battling crowds - get there early.

All you need is some empty jars, a piece of paper, and a tag or label for the jar with the person's name.

Set a budget to spend for each person. Label each jar, give a piece of paper to each person and ask them to write a gift they would like for Christmas and where it can be purchased from, including any website address. If it's clothing, size, colour and brand should be included and they must remain within the budget. They can add as many gifts as they like but they will only receive the number of gifts that correlate to the people buying them eg. a family of four, each person would buy and receive 3 gifts If there were gifts they absolutely wanted to be sure they received, they can include just those particular gifts. Pop the pieces of paper into their own jar, then each family member takes one piece of paper from each jar. (remember to write your name on the piece of paper, so you know who you are buying for!)

This way, you will not overspend, each person receives something they actually want, so there is no waste, which is great for the environment. The element of surprise is still there because if someone has put 5 slips of paper into the jar and 3 people are buying, they will not know which 3 out of the 5 they will receive on the day. If a gift is less than the budgeted amount, the remaining money can be used to make a donation to a charity or place a gift under a Wishing Tree. You can do this together as a family, which during this busy time of the year, will be an opportunity to do something together.

Thanks for your tips. We usually email the family wish lists and let each other know which gifts we have purchased for who. It works out fairly well. Everyone gets so something they want:)
