We see them all over, but often we overlook them – old rocks. January 7 is an entire day devoted to them, so even if you typically ignore them, pay attention to them today. You'd be surprised how interesting they can be and how many stories they
can hold. Whether you're going to a museum or buying rock-themed items, there are plenty of ways to celebrate in NYC.

**Go on a fossil dig
**
Considering all the buildings and concrete, NYC isn't exactly known for its fossil digs. However, you can take a trip out of the city and go on a dig in Western New York. You won't be able to start until the last week of May, but in the meantime, you can make a reservation. Other than the experience itself, the best part is that you get to keep all the fossils you find.

**Learn about your state's fossil
**
Did you know that each state has their own fossil? New York's fossil – the Sea Scorpion – was adopted in 1984. It dates back approximately 410 million years. Use Old Rock Day on January 7 to discover all about your state's fossil .

**Go to the museum
**
The best place in NYC to celebrate Old Rock Day is undoubtedly the Ameican Museum of Natural History . Adult ticket prices are $19.00, child prices are $10.50 and senior and student tickets are $14.50. They have an entire hall specifically devoted just to fossils. It actually has the largest collection in the world of vertebrate fossils. It's certainly one of the museums that takes more than one day to complete.

**Paint and decorate old rocks
**
Old rocks aren't exactly nice looking. Fossils are one thing, but plain, round rocks are another. Rather than place boring rocks around your garden, paint them in bright colors. Draw stars on them, lady bugs, butterflies or any other type of images you'd like.

**Buy rock-inspired clothing and accessories
**
If you'd like to deck yourself out in appropriately-themed clothing and accessories for Old Rock Day on January 7, there are several options for you to choose from. You can go with the Fossil Stone and Jasper Bracelet , a Fossil Necklace or a Fossil Stone Ring . For clothing, there is the shirt&ga_view_type=list&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade Sea Fossil Tee Shirt and the shirt&ga_view_type=list&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade Trilobite Shirt .

With so many ways to celebrate Old Rock Day on January 7, you'll be able to continue long after the day is over.
