National Roof Over Your Head Day, so if there's any day to put into perspective just how lucky we are, today would be it. Whether you're located in NYC or elsewhere, there are several ways to celebrate just how lucky we are for having a home.

Make small changes to your home

Since December 3 falls on a Saturday, many are off from work, which makes it a perfect chance to make repairs to your home. You don't have to start out with anything major; in some cases, starting out small can spur you to keep going with the changes. An important one to start with is to check that the batteries are good in your smoke detectors. Use tube socks stuffed with other tube socks to make draft stoppers so you can keep the warm air in and the cold air out. Fill in nail holes on your walls and repair any caulking in your bathroom. Clean out all the clutter you no longer want it's the perfect time so you can clean out for the holidays and either earn some cash or donate it to charity.

Earn some spare cash

If you want to make repairs to your home and you're short on money, start earning some spare cash to put into a "Home Repair" fund. Sell your unwanted items on eBay or Craigslist, post a few gigs on Fiverr, or look for some temporary holiday work.

Volunteer with an organization

Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful organization that helps build homes for deserving individuals. Check if the have volunteer opportunities in your area and lend a hand. It's one big way to give back to others for what we already have.

Donate to an organization

So maybe you don't have a lot of spare time to volunteer. If that's the case, there are still so many organizations you can connect with, one of which is Homes for Our Troops. They are a nonprofit organization that does what they can to build homes for injured servicemen and servicewomen the homes are given to the veterans at no cost. There are a variety of ways you can give back if you don't have time to volunteer donate time or money, purchase items from eBay where part or all of the proceeds go to the organization, or sell items on eBay and donate some or all of the proceeds yourself. For more information on getting involved, check out the Homes for our Troops page.

The number one way to celebrate National Roof Over Your Head Day on December 3 is to be grateful for your home. If you live at home with parents or someone else, thank them for letting you live there. Although we should be grateful every day, December 3 is a great day to start.
