There is little that is as amazing as biting into a sweet, flaky pastry whether it's in the morning or as a dessert. There's
something about the mix of textures between the inner filling and outer flakiness. If you're also a fan of pastries, December 9 you're going to be quite happy – It's National Pastry Day! Settle in and get ready to celebrate the day whether you're making them or just eating them in NYC.
**Buy pastries in NYC
**
If you're located in or around NYC, pick up some delicious pastries that are cause enough to celebrate.
Veniero's Pastry Shop and Caffe , which is located on 11th Street, opened in 1894. If there around that long, you know they have to be good. They sell a variety of pastries including lobster tails, Napoleons, and my favorites – french cannolis and Sfogliatella. A have a soft spot for the next place –
Ferrara Bakery & Cafe . It opened in 1892, and I discovered it by accident when I went to the San Gennaro Feast years ago and went in to grab a quick dessert. I fell in love with the cannolis and make it my mission to visit at least a few times a year. Their pastries, especially the Sfogliatel and Cannolis, are amazing.
Bring in pastries for coworkers
You are going to be the hit at the office if you celebrate National Pastry Day by bringing in a box of pastries for your coworkers. Sneak into work early enough so you can give them out before your coworkers can reach for hard bagels and stale coffee.
Pastry classes
If you would rather try to learn the art of making pastries rather than just buying them, the Institute of Culinary Education is a great place to start. They offer an
Intro to Pastry and Baking class that can help you learn everything you've ever wanted to know about the subject. It's 12 days of learning on subjects ranging from pies and tarts to baking puff pastries. The cost is $1,390 for the classes. There are a few other options as well including
Techniques of Pastry 1 and
Techniques of Pastry 1&2 Combined . An additional option is to earn a
Pastry & Baking Arts Diploma .
Wear your pastries
If you want to show off your love of pastries, there are two necklace options to consider. The first is a
Toaster Pastry necklace ; another is the
Chocolate Croissant Necklace . They're adorable gifts for yourself or someone else.
Learn New Recipes
Learning how to make various pastry recipes can be tempting although you may be inclined to constantly eat them once you learn how to do them. The first recipe is the
Sfogliatelle , which is a filled shell-shaped pastry. The recipe takes about 45 minutes from start to finish and requires ingredients such as ricotta cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla and shortening. Another is a recipe for
Cannolis – they're ready in a little less than 4 hours. You only need 3 or 4 ingredients for the filling, primarily ricotta, and for the shells you need a few more such as Marsala wine, flour, sugar, and eggs. Another recipe option is the
Strawberry Napoleon . You'll need ingredients such as strawberries, eggs, milk, and whipping cream.
After National Pastry Day on December 9, you may have to work out a bit harder the next day – I know I will – but at least for the day, it'll be quite worth it.
