Did you know there's a National Hat Day? It's on January 15, so if you're looking for an excuse to wear an odd hat or buy a regular hat for yourself, today is an excuse to do so. You'll see many

people around NYC wearing an assortment of different hats, so get on the bandwagon and get some of your own.

Buy a new hat in NYC

Of course the best way to celebrate National Hat Day is to get a new hat. There are many places across NYC to buy new hats whether you want something casual or more formal. Go to Lids if you want a casual sports hat to wear on a day-to-day basis or to a sports game. For more formal hats, such as one to wear to a wedding or the races, go over to The Hat Shop on Thompson Street. J.J. Hat Center on Fifth Avenue is the oldest hat shop in NYC; you can choose amongst a variety of hats including Fedoras, Derby hats, and Berets.

Wear odd hats

Instead of wearing a regular hat on National Hat Day, wear something a bit different. You can go with a small option, such as the Mini Clown Bowler Hat or the Mini Yellow Sombrero. For something more funky and decorative, wear a Feather Top Hat. Show your humorous side by wearing a Multi-Color Propeller Cap or a Man Eater Shark Hat. If you feel like showing off your love of food, opt for the Hot Dog Hat or Cheeseburger Hat.

Learn about hats worn in different cultures

Whether you're educating yourself or children, take some time out on National Hat Day to learn about hats worn in other cultures and even purchase some for yourself. Some of the hats to learn about include the Mexican Sombrero, the Wool Greek Fisherman's Cap or the Montecristi Super Fino.

Wear a different style

On January 15, purchase a hat that's different from your usual style. For a fancy option, opt for a Butterflies Headpiece, a Scala Pillbox Broach, or a Madison Cocktail Hat by Arturo Rios. For something that's still stylish but a bit more subtle, consider the Sur la Tete Starburst Beanie Hat, the Jaxon Cable Knit Peruvian Beanie Hat, or the Betmar Glamour Sun Brim. Even if you don't wear them on National Hat Day, you can always get yourself a gift and wear them on a future date.

Donate hats to a shelter

Unfortunately, there are those who can't afford to buy new hats whenever they wish. Gather up your clean, unwanted hats, or purchase new ones, and donate them to a homeless shelter so others can make good use of them. There are shelters all over NYC; check out this list for the one nearest you.

With so many ways to celebrate National Hat Day, you'll be set with knowledge and stylish hats long after the day is over.
