If you're someone who loves birds, you'll be happy to know that January 5 is National Bird Day . Birds are around us almost every day, but rarely do
we actually take the time to appreciate them. Consider the day your chance to learn more about the animals, feed them and even protect them. If you're located in NYC, there are a variety of ways you can celebrate the day.

Learn about the pigeons in NYC

NYC has quite a few types of birds, but pigeons are the ones most are familiar with. Some consider them a nuisance or hazard, especially because of the diseases they can carry. However, not everyone feels that way. There's a Pigeon Club of New York City , and considering the amount of dangers to birds around the city, there's a New York City Pigeon Rescue Central . If you know of pigeons but don't know much about them, check out this page of interesting facts.

Go bird watching

There are quite a few places across NYC you can bird watch, one of which is Central Park . Should you want to meet other bird enthusiasts, you can join a birding group such as The New York Audubon Society or Early Birders. You'll be able to meet others who share the same interest of bird watching and would want to continue the hobby even after National Bird Day.

Wear bird accessories and clothing

What better way to celebrate National Bird Day on January 5 than to wear bird-themed accessories and clothing. Should you want to purchase bird-themed jewelry for yourself or a loved one, consider Bird Post Earrings , an Initial Bird Necklace , or a necklace&ga_view_type=list&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade Bird Branch Necklace . Those who prefer hair accessories can purchase the hair peacock&ga_view_type=list&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade Pheasant & Peacock Brass Hair Clip , a hair&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_ship_to=US&ga_view_type=list&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade Blue Bird Hair Clip , or a hair&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_ship_to=US&ga_view_type=list&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade Pink Felt Bird Hair Clip . If you would rather wear bird-themed clothing, there are several options including a Grey Bird Print Party Dress , a Flying Bird Swing Shirt , or the Origami Birds Printed Tights .

Feed the birds

One of my favorite memories as a kid is when myself, my mother and my grandmother would go feed the birds in the park after going on a picnic. Celebrate National Bird Day by grabbing some bread and heading to the park with one of you loved ones to go feed the birds. If that's not an option, set up a little bird house in your back yard and leave out some bird seed for the birds to dine on.

Make the world safer for birds

There are quite a few dangers for birds in the world, some of which are completely preventable. For example, birds have a habit of crashing right into clear windows; two ways you can prevent this is by keeping blinds closed or moving plants away from the windows. If you live near the water, organize a shoreline cleanup to eliminate any garbage, especially anything that birds can get caught up in, such as 6-pack soda rings .

Although National Bird Day is on January 5, there are so many ways to celebrate that you can continue to learn more about them and help them long after the day is over.
