They say true love is worth waiting a lifetime for - but is it really worth waiting for? In
Chuen-Jiau stands before her husband's coffin but her eulogy is for no ordinary sorrow. At her husband's bidding, a tale that spans four reincarnated lifetimes is told. A tale of love lost four times. This cabaret will leave you thinking just one death is enough.
Lansy Feng is a treasure. From the opening moments of the show, you fall in love with her whimsical humour and beautiful voice. Inspired to write by her singing teacher, the inspiration for
really came from a singing class in which she had to choose a song. The song that came to heart was a narrative from her homeland of Taiwan. A tale of an 18-year-old woman yet to marry. At the time this was unacceptable but hers was a love that could stand no compromise. Lansy already had a coffin construction whirling in her creative mind and the most beautiful story serenaded itself to life.
Lansy is accompanied by pianists Simone Cremona and Lauren Kaye, who are responsible for a misty atmosphere. The piano acts a bit like a time machine to weave the spell of the eras as they shift. Lansy has a beautiful deep mellow voice that suits the jazz-style songs but her haunting purity of voice caresses the traditional Taiwanese melodies just as well. One Edith Piaf song is particularly magic. She spans the tongues of three languages as well as four lifetimes throughout the performance speaking English, Mandarin and French that is healed in this song.
As the director, Belinda Campbell has a wealth of angles to draw from (she is an actor, writer and drama teacher as well). Her passion and support make this beautiful art flourish.
You can only leave
with tears in your eyes. Tears of laughter and sorrow. Come on this journey of two hundred years and learn how to love truly.
The BlueStone Art Space is a beautiful venue that comes to life with fairy lights and Chinese lanterns. The heaters were on and there were drinks and popcorn to purchase at the bar. The space was organised well to contain the audience in the narrative. The architecture weaved beautifully in for effect. Wheelchair accessible with accessible toilets, you can comfortably enjoy a beautiful evening in this space.
The season for
is from the 22 of August to the 7 of September, so you have plenty of opportunity to gather friends and loved ones. You won't be disappointed.
