Fig, Harry, Cress, Anne and the poet have some company at last. A group of regular customers are trapped with them in a the Space Between, a dimension that has been deserted by all its living inhabitants. They are running out of food and something or someone is picking them off one by one. Harry and Fig take comfort in each other but when Cain and an agent of the Conception finally make it to the house the lovers rapidly find they need to put love aside and focus on finding a way out.

In this volume things get a bit George R. R. Martin, ie. you can kiss a few of the characters goodbye and you'd best be prepared for more carnage and sadness ahead. That's not much of a spoiler since it's forshadowed on the cover. We learn a bit of the poet's back story and some of Cress's well. There is also a little more about how Cain came to track down his house and things finally come to a head between Fig and the Conception.

House of Mystery Volume 4 also features a Halloween special, which is a truly epic crossover with not one but four other Vertigo comics. You don't need to be familiar with any of those series to enjoy these little stories but it's fun if you are.

The writing is still evocative and the plot is intriguing so I will keep on following it until the end.

Rated: 9/10

The story continues in House of Mystery Volume 5 : Under New Management.
