A rare look into the mind of genius and fashion designer Pierre Cardin, House of Cardin features interviews with a host of famous names including Jean-Paul Gautier, Sharon Stone, Alice Cooper, Naomi Campbell, Philippe Starck, Dionne Warwick, Kenzo Takada, Jean Michel-Jarre and Yumi Katsura. Exclusive access to archival footage of the Cardin empire helps complete the picture of the man behind the brand and highlights his revolutionary thinking.

In cinemas 23 July 2020, this enthralling documentary by P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes is an eye-opener for those who didn't know, and a reminder to the rest of us just how brilliant and unorthodox this fashion legend is.

Born in 1922 and still involved in his favourite pastime - work, Pierre Cardin rose from obscurity to become one of the top fashion designers in the world. He was a trailblazer and was the first and forerunner of many things. The first designer to get into diversity by hiring models of different ethnicity and race; the first in designing the floppy fashion look of the 50s and 60s; the first to develop the first line of clothes for men by a courtier; the first to emblazon his logo boldly on his products; the first to branch out from haute couture into ready-to-wear; the first to make eyewear a fashion statement and designer wear; and many other firsts.

You have to remember that back in the day it was perceived many of his decisions and moves were bold and shocking and not standard practise as it is today. He has certainly opened the pandora's box and paved the way. A futurist in ideas, design and business, this most decorated fashion designer who dressed and undressed many actresses over the years, wanted to touch the entire world. Must have huge dreams is his mantra and he's lived by it.

This documentary puts him front and centre of your psyche as it peels back the layers of an incredible life and career of one of fashion's true icons. From Italy to Paris as an employee at Paquin in Paris in 1945 to becoming the head of Christian Dior's atelier and finally founding his own label in 1950, the unrivalled creative vision of this genius is second to none.

It was uncommon, unlike today where we are more self-absorbed, for fashion designers to speak about themselves. This truly is an interesting and insightful look in getting to know the man behind the larger than life label and iconic logo.
