is quite a treasure. It's the only accommodation in central Gosford, so you would think they'd use their monopoly to charge an extravagant price for a substandard product. But in fact, it's quite the opposite. Not only is this place dirt cheap in terms of both accommodation and food, it's also really quite marvellous.

As a 1926 heritage-listed establishment, the Hotel Gosford has maintained every bit of its art deco, Roaring Twenties feel. In years gone by, Sydney folk would take to Gosford and other central coast towns for a bit of a seaside break, and the Hotel Gosford was a go-to venue for these holiday-makers.

The hotel is tastefully restored and appointed, and chances are you won't believe your luck when you see the prices. A single room (with shared bathroom facilities) will set you back as little as $50, double rooms start at $70, and double rooms with ensuites start at $90. They'll often throw in a free drink and a free coffee with every stay too. Rooms are clean, comfortable and cosy.

By far the best thing about the Hotel Gosford, however, is its absolutely stunning Writing Room on the first floor. It's a beautiful set up with oodles of glass French doors, wall sconces, plush lounges and chairs, wallpaper, and writing desks by the window. Make sure you spend some time reading and writing in this lovely area.

Other highlights at the hotel? It's got an original elevator, which will make you feel like you're on the set of an "old Hollywood" film. It's also got a VIP room located just off the foyer. Plus it has a lovely concierge glass-paned box in the foyer.

Meals at the Gosford are also pretty terrific. They've got the usual pub fare, with bargains on every night, such as a $14 roast on Sunday nights and $14 schnitzel nights on a Tuesday. They'll often have punting and quiz events on too, and live musicians of the weekend. The beer garden is also fun for summer evenings.

One of the best things about the Hotel Gosford is its location – it's right in the centre of town, directly opposite the train station, and five minutes walk to the waterfront and Bluetongue Stadium.

But what can one do while in Gosford? There's plenty. Nearby is the Forest of Tranquility, which has a range of events such as exhibitions, music nights and its famed firefly magic events, which celebrates the season for these gorgeous glow-in-the-dark insects. Nearby also is the Australian Reptile Park, the Fragrant Garden, the Hawkesbury River Cruises, and the picturesque beachside surf town of Terrigal.

Don't pass this one up. It's a traditional hotel with more than its fair share of charm.
