Footloose & fancy free in hot mineral waters
There is something about hot springs that most people seem to love, including hot artesian bores. We travel the world to find them, we climb in and soak our weary bones and aching muscles, we sooth our weary traveling bodies and minds, and Lightning Ridge has a great one.
Open 24hrs a day - free entry artesian hot bore pools at Lightning Ridge
Firstly, it is open to the public 24 hours a day and it is a communal area, where the community comes together to bathe and relax. Tourists are warmly welcomed and treated as though they are part of the extended family.
The water is hot, really hot, possibly too hot to use in the middle of the day. However there is a smaller pool which is slightly cooler.

But it is human nature that we all love a bargain and therefore that is possibly the biggest drawcard of all at the hot springs in lightning ridge - that they are completely free.
You can come any time you like, with or without children, with a friend or on your own, come in the middle of the night if you like, and it won't cost you a cent.
There are change rooms and showers which you are advised to use before you enter the water. Relax, they too are warmly heated and a lovely experience.
Bring your bathers, towel and some water to drink as you can get dehydrated and it is recommended not to stay in the hot water for more than 10 minutes at a time.

The artesian basin feeds a number of public bore baths in Lightning Ridge, Barren Junction and Walgett.
People have reported great relief in the pain associated with rheumatism and arthritis from bathing in the hot water, which is rich in potassium salts.
The water that feeds into the bath is approximately 2,000,000 years old and has a constant temperature of 41.5°C and comes from a kilometre underground.
You can find them at the end of Pandora Road, Lightning Ridge, 200m up, on the opposite side of the road from the Opal Caravan Park.
