The Queen of Hearts Invites You
How to Host a Wonderland Valentine's Party

If you are one of those people who is not into the mushy gushy stuff thrown about around Valentine's Day, and would prefer a big get together over an intimate date with your partner, then why not host your very own Valentine's party with a twist. Set the theme around Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - or more specifically, her encounter with the Queen of Hearts.

This shot tempered monarch might be the very antithesis of love and kindness, but she makes the perfect caricature for a family-based party.

Decorate the house with roses

The rose is red, the violet's blue,
The honey's sweet, and so are you.
Thou are my love and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou'd be you.
- Gammer Gurton's Garland, 1784

Not only are roses a traditional Valentines gift, but the Queen of Hearts loves them too. But only the red ones. Decorate the house with red roses, but add a few white ones into the mix for a party game later on.

white rabbit
Has the White Rabbit got some treats?

Buy white rabbits in the form of toys and ornaments. If you can find a white rabbit cookie box, then you can put some surprise treats inside.

Themed cups and cutlery

Replace coasters and table mats with playing cards, and use cups, plates and cutlery that fit the theme - rabbits, hearts, red, etc.

Have a costume party where everyone comes as a character from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. More specifically, you could say that couples should arrive dressed as the King & Queen of Hearts, children come as playing cards, single men as the Jack of Hearts, and single women as Alice. The best dressed couple will get crowned the King & Queen of Hearts.

playing cards

For a slight variation on truth or dare, why not try this out. Shuffle a deck of cards, and hand one out to each player. The person with the lowest value card has to reveal their most embarrassing date. Continue until there is only one player left who has yet to tell of their date disaster. They are the winner. If players get cards of equal value, then base the value of the suit. For example, the five of hearts is worth more than the five of spades.

Now to make use of those white roses. It is a bit like an Easter egg hunt and probably a game best for children. The playing cards have accidentally planted white roses instead of red. They have painted most of them, but there are still a few left, and the Queen is coming. Set a timer, and the kids have to find and pick as many white roses as they can. The one with the most gets a prize.

Before the party, ask every couple to write a love poem to their partner, and to bring it with them on the day. Have everyone take it in turns to get up and recite their poems to show their declaration of love.

The Queen of Hearts
She made some tarts,
All on a summer's day;
The Knave of Hearts
He stole those tarts,
And took them clean away.

It will be no surprise what I am going to suggest now, is it? Since this is a party, it is probably best to serve a buffet. Keeping with the theme, make (or buy) a selection of sweet and savoury tarts. Jam tarts are a good place to start. Strawberry, raspberry, cherry, or damson jam will make the best colour. There many other kinds of sweet tarts you can make too - apricot tart, lemon tart, chocolate tart. As a savoury option, perhaps make quiche, hart (venison) pie, pork pie, or a vegetarian goat's cheese tart.
