At the risk of starting an article in a negative way, here are some rather grim statistics. Over 120,000 men in Australia are living with prostate cancer and 20,000 more are diagnosed annually. Every year, 3,300 of those men don't survive.
Prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer kills women, but awareness of the disease and its funding are tiny by comparison. That's why
this September, all Australians are being encouraged to host a barbecue with friends, family or workmates.
Help turn up the heat on prostate cancer.
How do I get involved?
All you have to do is organise a barbie for any day in September and
register it via the
Big Aussie Barbie website. Once your registration is received, you will be sent a Welcome Pack, to help make your barbie a great success. Included in the pack is:
- a Big Aussie Barbie apron
- a fundraising poster
- McCormick spice mixes
- Selleys BBQ cleaning wipes
- a donation box, and
- balloons.
When you register, you'll also be directed to your own online supporter page, which you can personalise as you like, and link to social media if you wish to. Your supporter page is your hub for fundraising before, during and after the day of your Big Aussie Barbie.
Cricketer Matthew Hayden, whose father is a prostate cancer survivor, provides a testimonial for Big Aussie Barbie day:
How do I raise funds?
Let your guests know the barbie is for charity. You may like to ask for a fee from those attending. Or, get more creative, and hold raffles, cooking competitions, games (pay to participate) or even an auction on the day to drum up extra funds.
Prizes
There are some great prizes on offer to encourage fundraising.

What happens to the money raised?
This event is a fundraiser for the
Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia . The aim is to raise $1M this year. The Foundation is dedicated to reducing the impact of prostate cancer on men, their partners, families and the wider community through research, awareness and support programs.
