Our daughter and son in law enjoyed their Christmas holidays in Japan and have been on the look out for some authentic Japanese cuisine here in Brisbane. They recently invited us to try Hosokawa, a Japanese Restaurant in Hamilton.

I haven't been to Japan but it is on my "bucket list" so a dinner at a Japanese restaurant was the next best thing.

Hosokawa advertises its restaurant a "traditional Japanese cuisine served in a modern space with minimalist decor" and I believe that is what we got. The restaurant is located down busy Racecourse Road in Hamilton and presents itself as a simple and small restaurant which has outdoor tables to accommodate the customers.

It was a busy Saturday night when we dined here and would recommend making a reservation. The atmosphere was friendly, cosy and relaxed. The wait staff were helpful and pleasant.

And the food? Our daughter was the one who ordered for the table as the menu looked a little overwhelming as there was a lot to choose from. Japanese cuisine is made to share.

We enjoyed a sushi platter (large -11 pieces for $39) and a sashimi platter (small - 15 pieces for $25) for an appetiser. Both were made with fresh ingredients and tasted delicious.

We also had chicken karaage (deep fried marinated chicken thigh pieces - $13.50). This was ordered for our non-seafood lover of the family.

We also tried and enjoyed a nice glass of rice wine which was sweet to taste and served with ice cubes.

For our main dish, we all shared Sukiyaki ($38.50) which is a steaming hot pot with thinly sliced beef and vegetables in a sweet sukiyaki sauce/broth which is served with rice, miso soup and raw egg yolk for dipping. This was cooked right on the table on a small single burner and we could add the beef as we liked it. A very interactive and tasty dining experience.

Hosokawa is open from Tuesday to Saturday for both lunch and dinner. Street parking is available. Reservation highly recommended for dining on the weekend especially for dinner.

Japanese food is colourful, freshly made and enjoyed was shared. We had a lovely evening and thought the food was well presented and very tasty. I could see my husband and myself coming back for another meal in the future and having the confidence to order for ourselves.
