From Beenleigh to Caboolture, it easier than ever to climb on a horse in Brisbane. While thoroughbreds race across Albion Park, Clydesdales trot along Brisbane's parkland. The regal sport of equestrian is now more accessible as a hobby-horse for animal lovers of all ages.

Before riding like the wind, you'll need a helmet, long pants and closed shoes. It's more fun if you're a healthy weight, avoiding tender saddle sores.

When you arrive at the stable, introduce yourself with the horse's handshake – place the back of your hand near the horse's nose. It's a great way to break the ice and it works with most animals (I'm yet to try it with snakes, crocodiles, and sharks though).

To convince your parents to buy a mare, try introduction sessions or discuss your goals with the club's coach for the basics to owning your own Black Beauty.

Most clubs also offer casual pricing for trail and park rides, and private and group lessons for guided fun in the saddle.

At every club, safety is the top priority.

Some of the top picks in Brisbane:
