The overture to Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, opens the concert. Haunted Hills, a symphonic poem composed in 1950 by one of Australia's best-known composers, Margaret Sutherland AO OBE follows. Haunted Hills depicts the lush Dandenong Ranges juxtaposed with a reflection on the treatment of the traditional owners, the Bunurong and Woi Wurrung people, upon colonisation. Her "sound picture", as she called it, captures their bewilderment, betrayal and despair in 15 minutes of clashing horns and assertive dissonance.Opal: Double Concerto for Horns and Orchestra was premiered by the MSO in 2021 with their own horn players, Nicolas Fleury and Rachel Shaw . Zelman Symphony is delighted to present this work with the same soloists and to once again perform a work by May Lyon, the 2016 Zelman Symphony / University of Melbourne Emerging Composer of the Year.Opal is inspired by the mineraloid opal: its glimmering appearance, its creation over millennia and the human industry that mines the precious gem. The combination of two elements that form one gem is represented by the two horns, weaving within the orchestra as opal does within rock, close harmonies creating glimmering frequencies. The concert concludes with Brahms' acclaimed First Symphony. In 1876, after 21 years and numerous drafts, Brahms proclaimed it was finally a worthy successor to Beethoven's symphonies.
Pre-concert talk by Dr Jillian GrahamDr Jillian Graham, author of Inner Song: A Biography of Margaret Sutherland will present a pre-concert talk about Margaret Sutherland and Haunted Hills at 7:10 pm in Flockhart Hall, adjacent to the James Tatoulis Auditorium.
