An event for passionate arts and culture lovers
On the Sunshine Coast the weather is slowly beginning to warm up although it is still winter. As we head closer to Spring the Sunshine Coast is getting ready for the 2018 Horizon Festival on Aug 24-2nd September.

The festival has an exciting line-up of free and ticketed events including workshops, theatre, performance, visual art, film, music and storytelling. These events will take place around the Sunshine Coast in areas including Buderim, Nambour, Maroochydore, Caloundra, Coolum Beach, Cotton Tree, Eumundi, Kunda Park, Kings Beach and Maleny.

Here are some wonderful free events suited for the family you may want to check out during the festival. The 'Opening Ceremony and Celebration' acknowledges the Kabi Kabi and Jinbarra People as the traditional owners of the lands where Horizon takes place, and are strongly represented at the festival through arts, song, dance, and storytelling. The stage will be set at Cotton Tree Park, Cotton Tree, on August 24th. This will be an entertaining performance of song, storytelling, language, ceremony and dance. This is an event to learn about and experience the richness of the indigenous cultural heritage alive on the Sunshine Coast.

A gathering at the Point Arkwright Lookout, known to be one of Sunshine Coast's most beautiful headlands, '' Storyplace'' is a sharing of stories by elders, historians, poets and musicians. Kabi Kabi traditional custodians Brent Miller and Lyndon Davis will share the history of custodianship through stories. Poets, musicians and historians will also share stories amidst a beautiful coastal backdrop.

'Patterns in the Landscape-Tidal' is an environmental installation on the sands of Sunshine Coast beaches where performers will create elaborate patterns on the sand through synchronised movements. It looks like it will be fascinating to watch the process of these large-scale patterns evolve.

If you're a world music fan, you can experience the sultry, energetic beauty of 'Fiesta' which is a Flamenco performance of Spanish music and dancing at the Bison Bar in Nambour. The audience is invited to bring guitars, tap your feet, sing along and be transported to Spain.

Caloundra Regional Gallery will host four visual art workshops, poetry and spoken word poetry competitions will be hosted by the Bunker in Eumundi, standup comedian Arj Barker will perform for a laugh, and there's much more.
