A believable romantic movie with a stellar cast
If you are looking for an in your face comedy movie with vulgar humour and bad acting, then stop reading now, because Hope Springs is anything but that. This movie is a sweet and simple romantic comedy with a strong story.
Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold ( Tommy Lee Jones) are a couple who have been married for 30 years but have started to grow apart. Kay decides to take a step towards saving their marriage and books them onto a flight to the small town of Hope Springs to see a renowned couple's therapist, Dr Feld (Steve Carell). What follows are the actions of two people trying to rekindle their lost romance.
What makes this movie really work is the stellar performance by the two veteran actors. Streep and Jones have great chemistry and perform each scene with utmost believability. Streep's character doesn't always say everything she feels but yet her portrayal of Kay brings across every emotion clearly to the audience. Jones as the closed up character Arnold, gives a fantastic and sincere performance. Steve Carell as Dr Feld was the most unexpected performance. So used am I to seeing him in the funny man role that I kept expecting him to crack a joke. However he did a brilliant job with a mostly serious role.
The best part about Hope Springs is that most couple who have been together for a few years will be able to relate to at least some, if not all the problems that this couple are facing. The movie delivers some real 'laugh out loud' bits and surprisingly some teary moments as well.
A simple and cute love story performed beautifully, with strong direction and a tight screenplay. This is one movie not to be missed!
Great movie!! Would see it again and still laugh my butt off. Being a big fan of Tommy Lee Jones it was great seeing him in a more gentle type of movie with Meryl Streep who was really fantastic - as always.
