If you thought your Easter was destined to be filled purely with bunnies, eggs and a whole bunch of chocolate, fear not. There's a little something called the Hoopla Festival and it's on during the Easter long weekend down at delightful Darling Harbour.
Roll up, roll up to the Hoopla Festival; an elaborate extravaganza of circus, sideshow and street theatre acts. If you feel like you're juggling a lot in your life at the moment, take a break and be dazzled, wowed and amazed by brilliant performers tackling treacherous tasks and be mesmerized with mind-boggling feats.
The Hoopla Festival will be held over the Easter long weekend, Friday the 6th of April to Monday the 9th of April between 11am – 10pm Friday to Sunday and 11am to 6pm on Monday. There will be a range of venues hosting these unique entertainers including Big Top, The Tiny Top, The Castello, Street Performers' Pitch, Ringside and Roaming.
Clearly kids are going to love seeing these wild performances and as if that isn't enough, they'll also have the opportunity to partake in some of the circus antics by popping over to the zone totally dedicated to kids' enjoyment, Circus Works. The whole family can try their hand at juggling, plate spinning and stilt walking, maybe even finding they have a special hidden talent.
What's more is that all outdoor entertainment is free, with plenty to be seen Ringside, Roaming and at the Street Performers' Pitch. The schedule of performers will change daily, with all the details on who will be there to entertain being found on the big blackboard at the venue. Some of the daring darlings to be found at the Street Performers' Pitch are Becky Hoops, Clingfilm Guy, Fantastic Toy and The Shirlee Sunflower Show. Hula hooping, fire breathing, juggling, escaping from glad wrap (what the what?) and acrobatics are a few of the unique acts you'll get with this bunch.
Amusing street theatre performances will be roaming around, being brought to life by Three Men in a Tub and France's Begat Theatre. At Ringside you'll be able to get a taste of aerial acrobatics and agility from Strapping Young Lads, The Little Red Trapeze Company and high energy music, dancing, leaping and theatre brought to you by the captivating UK act The Chipolatas.

Hidden under the Big Top, The Tiny Top and The Castello are the intimate experiences and antics of many a seasoned artist. Evoking amazement and inspiring will be Becky Hoops - Barbie, Gareth Jones, Las Cossas Nostra, Démodés, Lilikoi Kaos, Maple Staplegun, Mr Vita – TNT, Olivia Porter – Cuckoo, Pandora Boxes, Precarious, Shep Huntly – Master Showman, The Birdmann, The Great Dave, The Great Gordo Gamsby, The League of Sideshow Superstars, Three High Acrobatics – Knock Off, and Tony Rooke – Get Rooked. Ring of Fire is a show that mixes a few different acts together so you can get a comprehensive look at the world of circus and sideshow performing all in one whack.
For the indoor entertainment you'll need to grab a ticket. You can buy them online for each of the shows you want to see or they can also be purchased from the box office at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre forecourt on each day of the festival from 10:30am. Most tickets are $5 but for the more comprehensive shows they're between $10 and $20. All events are free for kids under 13, just make sure you get a free ticket for them when purchasing your own as they're needed for entry.
Phew, there are a lot of unique acts to enjoy and be exhilarated by, so be sure to pop down for a look, the outdoor entertainment is free after all. So get captivated by the magical world that is the Hoopla Festival.
