Starting from the White Horse Hill car park is the Hooker Valley track in the Mount Cook national park. This is an easy 2-3 hour walk which is mostly flat and crosses many suspension bridges and sections of the Hooker River and provides some excellent views of Mount Cook on a clear day.

Most of the walk is boarded and is very flat. There are a few sections with stairs and a few sections upon a very clearly beaten footpath. The walk is very popular due to its fantastic views, easy access and easy difficulty. It's a perfect option for anybody wanting to go on an afternoon walk with the kids.

Near the start of the walk is the Alpine Memorial which provides a good spot for a moment of reflection as well as a fantastic lookout. There are a few shelter huts on the route in case you get caught out by the weather and a few picnic benches at the end for those who want to sit and enjoy the view over the lake and base of the mountain. The walk returns along the same route.

The weather in New Zealand is very temperamental and so you should always be prepared for changes in weather and temperature. Always have a rain jacket and something warm with you as well sunscreen and water, even on easy tracks. Grab your camera, grab a picnic and make the most of the awesome nature that New Zealand has to offer.
