The , located on the banks of the Shing Mun River, presents a unique mix of history, arts and culture of early Hong Kong and the nearby South China region. The museum was uniquely built from an architectural perspective; it followed the traditional
si he yuan - the design revolves around the traditional Chinese 'courtyard' house that once characterized Beijing's architecture.
The museum houses six permanent galleries with an exhibition area covering 7,500 square metres. I have recently visited the Museum taking the opportunity to visit some of the current exhibitions. They are varied in terms of the theme and focus:
Wearable Blessings: Traditional Chinese Children's Clothing
The exhibition showcases more than 200 items/sets of children's clothing and accessories starting from the late Qing dynasty to the Republican period. It's amazing to look at the decorative motifs or patterns of children's clothing on display because you can catch a glimpse of how the blessings were embraced and expressed in the fashion of their times. The popular parents' wishes for their children were strongly linked to happiness, fast growth, longevity, abundant offspring and success.
